Marriage Licenses can be obtained through either our Globe or Payson Offices between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays. The fee is $72 and can be cash, check, money order, Visa, Master Card, Discovery, or Debit Card. In order to apply for a marriage license, you must:
There are two types of marriage licenses available. One is a standard license and one is a covenant license. In order to enter into a covenant marriage, the parties must advise the clerk at the time of seeking a marriage license. At that time they will sign a declaration of intent to enter into a covenant marriage, present an affidavit that they have received premarital counseling from a member of the clergy or from a marriage counselor and present a notarized statement that is signed by the clergy or counselor that confirms the parties were counseled as to the nature and purpose of the marriage and grounds for its termination and were provided with a informational pamphlet. (ARS 25-901) A husband and wife may apply for a covenant marriage conversion by applying to the clerk of the superior court and filling out the necessary documents. They are not required to receive premarital counseling and not required to have the covenant marriage separately solemnized. (ARS 25-902) All marriage licenses should by law be returned to the Clerk of Superior Court's office within ten days of the solemnization of the marriage. The Clerk's office then records the license in a marriage book and returns the original to the parties. The Clerk of the Superior Court has marriage license records dating back to the late 1800s of licenses issued in Gila County. If you wish to receive a copy of a marriage license obtained and recorded in Gila County, you may apply by mail or in person. You must provide the names of the parties and an approximate date of marriage. If you are uncertain of the year of the marriage, there is a statutory fee of $26 for each year searched. The certified copy of the license is a separate $26 fee. A marriage license abstract will be furnished unless a party requests an actual copy of the marriage record. Information regarding licenses issued since 1995 are currently available through the Arizona Supreme Court's Public Access Website. Information regarding licenses issued prior to that date are currently only available through the clerk of court office. |
